As parents, it’s our responsibility to ensure that our children are as happy and healthy as possible. Most of us have got the happy part cracked, but what about the healthy part? For a lot of us, there’s a daily struggle of encouraging our kids to be active.
Unlike when we were kids, a lot of today’s children would rather spend their time playing on their computer rather than playing outside with their friends. Parents used to have to drag their kids back inside, but today, it’s gone completely the other way, with kids preferring to be indoors rather than outdoors.
So, if you want to encourage your kids to be more active, what are the best methods of doing so?
Be an active family
Children learn from how their parents act, so if you want to encourage your kids to lead active lives, you need to do the same. Be a family that spends their spare time out and about, not slouched in front of the TV. Spend your weekends going on family bike rides, going swimming, or taking camping trips. The more fun you make being active, the more likely your kids are to make physical activity a part of their lives. Sign them up to a sports team
A lot of kids find exercising on their own a little dull, so to make exercise more exciting, why not sign them up to a sports team? Whether they like the idea of playing football, hockey, or some other team sport, sign them up to a local team and encourage them to embrace their competitive streak. Perhaps you could suggest to their coach about entering the team in a local competition or if there’s not one, starting your own, complete with medals and trophies from somewhere like Premier Trophies. There’s nothing like a bit of healthy competition to encourage kids to be more active.
Make exercise fun
One of the best ways to make your children happier to exercise is to ensure that it’s fun. How about turning your garden into an assault course? Or, what about holding races in the park? Perhaps you could get your little ones a trampoline to bounce on? The more fun exercise is, the higher chance that you kids will enjoy it and will want to make exercise part of their lives. So, get creative and come up with some simple ways to make keeping fit more enjoyable for your kids. If all else fails, perhaps getting a Wii Fit could be the answer? They get to play computer games while working out and staying shape, what could be better?
It can be hard to get kids to want to exercise. However, if you get creative and think outside of the box, it doesn’t have to be as difficult as you would think to get your kids to exercise. It’s just a case of being smart about how you go about it; that’s all.
